Week 5 Investment

This week's readings were very interesting and brought up a lot of good points about instructional design. When it all comes down to it, the typical lecture is not enough. In fact, the article mentioned that many teachers view a lecture as a conversation and just "wing it" through the lesson. The truth is if you are not prepared for your instruction the students will recognize that. No matter how you structure lecture, it's important to have other moving parts for instructional design because lecture is not enough.

There are many different forms of instruction that can be used besides lectures. There can be demonstrations, discussions, field trips or many other different instructional styles that can be used instead of lecture. But I have an important thought about this. Why not have lecture present and let the demonstrations or discussion be a part. I think you can easily do both. There are times that lecture needs to happen for proper instruction.

I have had many classes in high school and college that have been very lecture heavy. In those courses, I learned less because of the poor quality of teaching. However, I had a course once where there wasn't enough lecture. There were times where all I wanted was lecture so that all the information would be laid out there. I truly believe there needs to be a balance.

This article brings up a lot of good points. One of the main/only benefits to lecture is how the information is displayed straight forward. Beyond that, active learning is a better method of teaching. Which brings back to my point, why can't we use both lecture and active learning styles in the same lesson? If we do, then students can make connections and can be lead to higher quality discussions and demonstrations in class.
